in earnest

“and the air was full of Thoughts and Things to Say. But at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. Big Things lurk unsaid inside.”
--arundhati roy

i sat down to write this ritualistically
with pen and paper
to only remember i don't have your new address.

i am listening to arcade fire,
which of late
has become my new soul stirrer.

for me it releases the hormones of
utter love, despair, hope and
general exhaustion at the incredible emotions that can
whisk us into being,

into being human.

it's so tiring to live life in its entirety;
but it is that concrete filled sack of fatigued bones
and that sleepy eye lid twinge
that satisfies
that allows this decaying body to sink into inspired peace.

its all of the above i feel now.

its all of the above that i felt
on sunday night
when i sat on r's bed
and watched him read out
a letter/card you wrote to him from india,
when he had just returned to nz.

the tiny writing,
the revelation,
the regret,
the inspiration.
the paths of pursuit;

the microcosm of tolstoy
the warm embrace his writing gave/gives you.
the stirrings.

i was held captive
controlled by the power of your thought,
the selfless pursuit for a better being,
the demeaning ways upon yourself;
the ideals.

oh, the ideals.

and deep within me,
when i saw a solitary tear glisten down r's cheek
i realised just how much i wanted to know you more.

how i wanted to talk about all these things
you mentioned in the letter.
the ways of being moral.
of what it is to be.
to be.

i became acutely nostalgic for the first few times we hung out,
(almost a year ago now....)
the music, the thoughts, the late nights.
the wonder.
the endless river.

and i wonder what happened.

i firmly believe we don't live in one moment,
that we cannot afford to hang onto one facet of a person.
i feel each person is a liquid cosmos unto themselves,
a colourful world of meaning, quest, fragility and knowledge
that ebbs, flows, and shifts.

so i don't lament on the interactions we have had since,
i merely wonder whether our priorities are shifting
and whether the alcohol shadowed nights are a habit?
or individually have sincere meaning?

i don't expect you to hold the answers or to grasp the meaning
of what i am trying to articulate with my limited control of language.

i just hope that we can be children together again,
without letting the earnestness of adulthood bury our thoughts.

love.

Vouched for Seed

I have had many a garden shaped revelation.

But it took me exactly 23 years to connect it to the bigger picture.
A few weeks ago I was caressing a furry mallow plant leaf in my own back yard when a familiar face popped over the fence line.

In the mid-morning, golden sunshine of Aro Valley she told me about one of the former tenants of this house (I now live in) having an epiphany in this very same garden, and then in the Aro community gardens. He had come from Chile to study something obscure, and very un-garden related in Wellington.

But stone by stone, turned this trashed piece of land into almost a Piet Oudolf vision.

His garden curiosity took him to the Aro Community Gardens, which set him well on the path of ecology and community gardening.

A few years later an email from him appeared out of the ether talking about how, now, he made a living out of his passion; he taught, and encouraged Chilean kids gardening and permaculture principals.

I looked back down at this mallow leaf, and dug my toes deeper into this almost sandy, starved soil of the summers and overflowed with gratitude that such a story could be passed on; that such a story could empower.

This clipping of history resurfaced last night when I sat on the floor of the Sustainability Trust listening to short speeches by local growers, food creators and consumers. It was the launch of the Local Food Week (April 2nd – 7th), and the aim was to inspire local (approx. 200 km radius from Welington) food production and consumption.

I felt so wholesome listening to all of this, and returned home to a moonlit garden loyally awaiting when I would next give it attention.

Happy Autumn! Happy Harvest!

The Hanging

aaah. returned to un-hulled millet, chickpea, vege concoction.
flavoursome.

but a tired old taste that rises out of the ashes of a burnt out rose.

just got back from cleaning out and putting out the recycling at tory st (satisfying),

then a non-existent film committee meeting?
i am not sure what happened, but nobody was around in the designated meeting space.

so instead i went to the launch gathering of 'local food week'
which had a whole lot of short speeches by local (organic) farmers, beer makers (what's the technical name for them?) and ngo's like kaibosh.

empowering. invigorating.
but the audience consisted of the same old crowd i see at most things. i am getting tired of the stereotyped wholesome person! there are too many, and they are now cliche.

i think i realised that at luminate,
and then it was further affirmed at the south karori commune's equinox party where i fell asleep by the fire for most of the night!

do you know what i mean?

when you can predict how a person lives, even if it is your ideal lifestyle/thoughts they think, its gets boring.

stagnant.
aah. lucretius. shall have a perusal about for that almighty piece of writing. imagine, what perception. its so refreshing when so much of what we are surrounded with is 20th century onwards.

(i fear my tiredness has brought the Cynicism out of me!)

but ATOMS! fuck yeah.

but i am such a sucker for marion cotillard's eyes, and those cheek bones. such sexual attraction!
and what a fucking good name?

rust and bone.

its almost like scraping fingernails across a blackboard.

your thoughts of freedom triggered this thought.
maybe it is freedom within identity, ourselves; the cosmos within that we seek?
freedom without, in the wider world, is shit and time consuming.
i remember being freed by becoming vegan, because it limited my choices.
no supermarkets. not 95% of the menu. etc etc.

but i do enjoy exploring this idea of the cosmos within that most eastern philosophies hang off.its almost like the pool of calm/freedom that we seek within ourselves, is enlightenment,

is a suspended world greater than the world we think we are a part of.
its hanging there.
a shard of glass, polished facets on it, some jagged pieces, just hanging there.

but when we are truly free, that shard of glass is no longer a shard. its a magnificent world that we can delve in with no trouble, and seek whenever the outer world troubles us?

i think alex grey tries to tap into that....?

something that you may be interested in is charles eisenstein's 'the ascent of humanity'.
i have not yet read it (still in my reading drought), but its often quoted and i often agree with what is said.

what did you think of the life of pi?
those aerial shots of the boat, raft and the vast sunset reflected waters. that is so close to sublime.

we aren't living the sublime when we watch the film, but i feel pi's awe is instilled in us?

time can be freedom. various places. various situations.
but what about love? is there not freedom in that.
and why?

oh i long so much to be loved romantically!
hahaha.
with that thought,

i will take myself to bed and traverse the hemisphere to the middle of a chinese village where there is abundant health. abundant old people. happiness. and community.

and in that world i will sleep in.

23: sunshine. calm. nostalgia. goodbye.

while i sit here
listening
to futile devices
i become the feeling.

that emanates.

on the crest of my room,
self
purge;
the year purge.

wednesday 13th march 2013

-- garden time
-- dad time
-- harvest moon

rising to my 23rd year
with saggy eyes
but excitement for the day.

the first of my 23rd year;
i had already set a full stop.

i was tired.
but excited.

the autumn sunshine
was sparkling the night's dew
shaking it into the melting reveries of the morning,
when human feet
trample the undergrowth of the night
and stir it into defense.

i often imagine it retaliating
against my chilly cold toes
and growing rapidly over my feet,
fixing my time;
stapling me to ground
and stillness.

but i still seek that.

while caressing the mallow leaves,
the furriness,
the largeness of a wild indian plant,
the silver grey of survival

a lady who watches
talked of the chilean
whose economics phd
turned into a permacultural strong hold
in this garden.

strengthened and nimbler in foot
i tore out the shadowy presences of the garden,
and out of myself.

then watched it wash away down the plug hole
as i scratched those unexplainable rashes of the present.
i was not ready.

not yet.

but neither was dad,
he spent half an hour at a wadestown bus stop
observing the surrounds
basking in morning birds and sunshine

before he was thrusted into the rush of a thriving bus stop
of youth with places to go to.
fast.

we headed waterfront wards
armed with lebanese kebabs and baklava
to stave off the hunger of our relationship.

that seriousness that always burbles threateningly
after all these years of me suppressing my child.

but then one question
changed the river;
the water, the curves;
the embankments were suddenly less oppressive
and the wave of emotion that is our family
washed out
flooded the afternoon
with names, dates; feelings.

loss. and reflection.

i lost him at the same bus stop
to my mother, cousin and then to india
where those mountains that i seek embrace him.

protect him.

mustn't let this wave get to me,
embankments need to be retained;
food must be cooked.

explosion.
of people.
blankets.
food.
evening light.

laughs.
restrain.
awkward love.

melted into
overwhelmed.

then loneliness.
but a warm greenish yellow glowing warmth.

asset sales

checked in.

-- old st paul's
---parliament grounds (part I and II)
--- long walk
--- liquor store
--- home
--- asset

tinged by the cold,
in a brutalist shadow
i play beasts
and dig my hands into
my nervous pockets of time.

and then there is salmon pink.
just a flash.
and it is he.
wandering as he always has.

avoiding the cold of course.
she ambles about behind him,
casual.
no sense of nervous time.

then it is the four woods.
the totara. rimu. kauri. matai.
the four colours, strengths
of this upturned boat they call spirituality.

but, the spirituality aside from woods,
my father pursues
is warmth; a shield from the wellington wind.

the parliament green is sunnier. sheltered.
just for a little while.
a three quarter trick provides the balance.

as does the impassioned voice of 370,000
whose souls are framed
in an orange window of three words.

is that the future
i ask
staring at the milestone in my life;
in this country's life.

i hear this country cough
with its must and phlegm.
and i know i must fight more for her.

lunch was not so easy to hear the answer for.
my house was invalidated.
new world's aisles of plastic and pseudo-food
temporarily voted
as a quick fix.

a quick fix for this country.
even for my parents.

back to the green.
artichokes. olives. sundried tomatos
(are they really sundried?)

then the 5 minutes on,
5 minutes off
lambton quay.

anticipating hard their arrival at my life;
but they never quite got there.

but they got up through the tunnel
to the door of number 10.

the chickens of old friends
whose greatest worth at this end of life
is their asset sales.

it was whiskey. laughs.
and competition.

but they are
after 40 years
still children.

still awkward.

the tale of 3 cities

so. i have made it.
a promise now in hand.
not a shame,
but, a challenge.

        ---------------

monday 11th march 2013

-work.
-film society agm
(now on the committee)
-parental hang out.

work -
winged with post-work non-comittance.

agm -
tiredness
tinged with the act of being busy,
having places to go.

    --------------------

explosion insert -
return from work to hurriedly shower
prior to meeting my mother at the railway station.

time existent: 45 minutes.
delay: 10 minutes
cause: a red explosion

thoughts of the purging of the soul,
the melting of the body
the beauty of no control;

the fear of red puddles forming on the floor,
the drip down the leg;
the punctuation of un-culled forest hairs.

its everywhere.

what do i do?

surely this can't be what that text,
informally sent,
so seriously considered,
has resulted to.

a melting body.

must ask my girlfriends about this.

i got to the railway station in time.
thoughts still delayed in cold, misty air
of that watery red dripping out of me.

never, witnessed. before.

   ---------------

chapter I

parental --
nervousness hung in the air,
she hasn't arrived,
and he was yet to arrive.

if only they had cellular machines.

she arrives.
the warm, soft bony kiss
and i melt.

i say harsh words against this woman,
but that warmth.
that softness.
even the peaked cheeks
are my net of comfort.

chapter II

standing at courtenay place.
cold. moist cold air.

no more nervousness.

but he got off at the wrong bus stop.

embassy. orange bus. $9

message received
somewhere between
embassy and reading.

then its the three people
who co-existed 18 years together
now fragmented by three cities.

this is the tale of it.

istanbul dried falafel
the tail.
